The appointment of Gazi Ashraf Hossain Lipu as the new top selector of the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) is a major step forward for Bangladeshi cricket. Following the first BCB board meeting of the year, Sports Minister and BCB President Nazmul Hasan made this announcement. As the head selector, Minhajul Abedin Nannu is replaced by former captain of the national team Gazi Ashraf.
Nazmul Hasan expressed the board's satisfaction with the appointment, stating that Gazi Ashraf was the unanimous choice after considering several candidates. Although Gazi Ashraf's name had not been prominently discussed for the position, his extensive experience in cricket and leadership qualities have earned him respect within the country's cricketing circles.
Joining Gazi Ashraf on the selection panel is former Bangladesh opener Hanan Sarkar, who brings a wealth of experience in age-level cricket selection. Sarkar, known for his distinguished career with 17 Tests, 20 ODIs, and over 4000 runs in first-class cricket, adds valuable insight to the panel.
Completing the selection panel is former Bangladeshi spinner Abdur Razzak, who also served as a member of the previous panel. His expertise in spin bowling and understanding of the game further strengthens the selection committee.
The appointment of Gazi Ashraf and the inclusion of Hanan Sarkar and Abdur Razzak mark a new chapter in Bangladesh cricket's selection process. However, this transition also sees the departure of Minhajul Abedin Nannu and Habibul Bashar from the selection panel.
Nazmul Hasan acknowledged the contributions of Minhajul and his panel, expressing the board's appreciation for their service. He also mentioned that the board intends to retain their expertise and will appoint them to suitable positions in due course.
The appointment of Gazi Ashraf Hossain Lipu and the newly formed selection panel signals a fresh approach towards talent identification and team building in Bangladesh cricket. The board aims to propel the nation's cricketing ambitions to new heights as they prepare for upcoming challenges and competitions.
