Nov 04, V7N- Atalanta halted Napoli's unbeaten run in Serie A with an impressive 3-0 victory at the Diego Armando Maradona Stadium, as Ademola Lookman’s two goals and Mateo Retegui’s late strike clinched the win. This upset cut short Napoli’s hope to extend their lead at the top, with Inter Milan now just one point behind them after their narrow 1-0 win over Venezia.
Lookman opened the scoring in the 10th minute, capitalizing on a header from Marten de Roon and slotting it past Napoli’s goalkeeper Alex Meret. He doubled the advantage with a brilliant curling strike just after the 30-minute mark, exploiting space granted by Napoli's defense—a lapse that left Napoli coach Antonio Conte visibly frustrated. Despite Napoli’s best chance—a strike from Scott McTominay that hit the post—the home side struggled to mount a comeback.
Atalanta sealed the result with Retegui’s 11th goal of the season in stoppage time, bringing the Bergamo side within three points of Napoli. Lookman praised the performance, saying, "Bringing three points back from the league leaders is a great source of pride," while coach Gian Piero Gasperini acknowledged the squad's improvement and the confidence gained from such a result.
Conte was philosophical about Napoli’s loss, urging his team not to be ashamed, acknowledging Atalanta's cohesion and quality.
Meanwhile, Inter Milan maintained pressure on Napoli with Lautaro Martinez’s decisive goal against Venezia. Venezia nearly equalized in stoppage time, but VAR overturned Marin Sverko's goal due to a foul in the buildup. Inter coach Simone Inzaghi stressed the need for greater efficiency, stating, "We clearly need to be more clinical," especially in such close matches.
Elsewhere, Fiorentina moved level with Atalanta on 22 points after Moise Kean’s goal secured a 1-0 win over Torino. Roma suffered another setback with a 3-2 defeat to Verona, leaving them 11th in the table and intensifying pressure on coach Ivan Juric, who took over from Daniele De Rossi just two months ago.
Serie A continues to heat up, with Inter and Napoli set for a high-stakes clash at the San Siro next Sunday, in what promises to be a critical matchup in the race for the title.
