Nov 04, V7N- Zeynep Sonmez of Turkey clinched her first WTA title in a commanding 6-2, 6-1 victory over American Ann Li in Merida, Mexico. Sonmez, 22, became the second Turkish player to win a WTA title, following Cagla Buyukakcay's historic victory in Istanbul in 2016. Ranked World No. 127, Sonmez needed only 70 minutes to secure her win over Li, ranked 111th and a former top-50 player.

Sonmez broke Li three times in each set, seizing control of the match and winning the last six games to seal the trophy. She reflected on her long journey, saying, “It was one of my biggest dreams. I've been working for this day for 15 years,” and expressed gratitude for fans in Turkey who stayed up late to support her.

Both players faced the added challenge of playing two matches on Sunday due to rain delays. Li defeated Polina Kudermetova in a three-set semi-final earlier in the day, while Sonmez rallied from 4-2 down in the first set to beat 17-year-old Alina Korneeva, 7-6 (7/5), 6-2, to reach the final.
