NOV 24,V7N- The New York Red Bulls secured a commanding 2-0 victory over local rivals New York City FC in the MLS Eastern Conference semi-final on Saturday, setting up a showdown in the final against the winner of Orlando City and Atlanta United’s clash on Sunday.
The Red Bulls struck twice early in the intense "Hudson River Derby," held at Citi Field due to Yankee Stadium's unavailability, and held firm against a determined NYCFC side to advance.
Early Blitz Secures the Win
Uruguayan midfielder Felipe Carballo ignited the Red Bulls’ charge in the 16th minute with a stunning strike. After NYCFC's headed clearance fell to him outside the box, Carballo controlled the ball deftly before unleashing a thunderous shot into the top corner, leaving NYCFC keeper Matt Freese with no chance.
Just nine minutes later, the Red Bulls doubled their lead. From an Emil Forsberg corner, the ball ricocheted to Belgian forward Dante Vanzeir, who struck a precise, low drive that clipped the inside of the post before nestling into the net.
The two early goals shocked NYCFC and left the home side scrambling for a response.
NYCFC’s Struggles in Front of Goal
NYCFC created several opportunities but failed to capitalize. Alonso Martinez was at the heart of their best chances in the first half, including a close-range effort smothered by Red Bulls goalkeeper Carlos Coronel and a misdirected flick from a dangerous James Sands delivery.
After the break, NYCFC piled on the pressure, with Martinez forcing Coronel into another fine save and Keaton Parks heading over from a promising position. Austrian Hannes Wolf added to NYCFC’s frustrations when his angled shot flashed wide of the far post.
Despite dominating possession in the second half, NYCFC couldn’t break through a resolute Red Bulls defense, anchored by the outstanding Coronel.
Red Bulls’ Playoff Journey Continues
As founding members of MLS in 1996, the Red Bulls have yet to win the MLS Cup, but they now stand just one game away from a shot at the ultimate prize. After finishing seventh in the Eastern Conference this season, their playoff run has provided hope of finally breaking their championship drought.
Later on Saturday, the Western Conference semi-finals will see Los Angeles FC take on the Seattle Sounders, with both teams aiming for a place in their conference final.
