Dec 26, (V7N) - Young opener Sam Konstas made a stunning Test debut for Australia on Thursday, smashing an entertaining 60 against India in the fourth Test at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. His fearless approach against a formidable Indian bowling attack helped Australia reach 112-1 at lunch on a scorching day, setting a solid platform in this crucial match of the five-Test series.
Konstas, just 19 years old, was brought into the side to replace Nathan McSweeney and showed remarkable poise and confidence against India's pacers, particularly Jasprit Bumrah. Taking first strike, the teenager endured a challenging opening spell but soon found his rhythm. His maiden Test runs came with a flick off Bumrah, and he soon dazzled the crowd with a series of audacious strokes, including a reverse ramp for fours and a six off the Indian spearhead.
The spirited display drew reactions both from the crowd and the opposition, with Indian captain Virat Kohli engaging in a heated exchange after a shoulder bump. Unfazed, Konstas counterattacked, hammering 18 runs in a single Bumrah over. He reached his half-century off just 52 balls, the third-fastest by an Australian debutant.
However, Konstas's impressive knock ended when Ravindra Jadeja trapped him lbw for 60 off 65 balls. The crowd rose to applaud his fearless debut innings, which laid the foundation for Australia's strong start.
At the other end, veteran opener Usman Khawaja played a contrasting role, anchoring the innings with a patient 38 off 73 balls by lunch. Marnus Labuschagne, who joined Khawaja after Konstas's dismissal, remained unbeaten on 12.
The match holds high stakes, with the series tied 1-1. India secured a commanding win in Perth, Australia bounced back with a dominant victory in Adelaide, and the rain-affected third Test in Brisbane ended in a draw.
Australia made two changes for the match, with Scott Boland replacing the injured Josh Hazlewood and Konstas making his debut. India brought in Washington Sundar as a second spin option, dropping Shubman Gill.
With both teams seeking a decisive edge, the match promises intense competition, and Konstas's debut has already become a highlight of the series.
