CHATTOGRAM, Jan 22, (V7N) – Bangladesh opener Soumya Sarkar has expressed optimism about his team’s prospects in the upcoming ICC Champions Trophy, set to be held in Pakistan and the UAE next month. Speaking ahead of his return to competitive cricket, Soumya emphasized that belief and balanced performances in all three departments—batting, bowling, and fielding—are key to success.
"If everyone believes, we can," Soumya said. He discouraged negative speculation about Bangladesh’s chances, adding, "If we do well in all three departments, we can win against any team."
Soumya’s confidence is fueled by Bangladesh’s performance during their recent tour of the West Indies. While the team was swept in the ODI series, they bounced back to claim victory in the T20 series, a format that has traditionally been their Achilles' heel.
Soumya contributed with crucial innings during the tour, including a steady 73 off 73 balls in the final ODI and an aggressive 43 off 32 balls in a T20 match. However, his momentum was halted by a finger injury and a subsequent virus infection.
Soumya is now preparing to make his mark in the ongoing Bangladesh Premier League (BPL), playing for the Rangpur Riders. The Riders have already secured their playoff spot with a perfect record of eight wins. Despite his eagerness to play from the start, Soumya had to watch from the sidelines due to his injury.
"The hardest part was watching games at home," he admitted. "I regret not being able to play, but now I am focused on making a strong comeback."
The BPL has seen high-scoring games on batsman-friendly wickets, and Soumya is keen to adapt quickly. "Being back on the field is the best feeling," he said.
Soumya emphasized the importance of mental preparation as he looks to regain his rhythm. "On the field, opponents won’t give me anything easy," he acknowledged. "The harder I practice, the better I’ll be mentally prepared."
With over two months away from the game, Soumya is cautious yet determined to make his opportunities count. He remains optimistic about contributing to both the BPL and the national team’s campaign in the Champions Trophy.
As Bangladesh gears up for the global tournament, Soumya’s return could be a pivotal boost for the team’s aspirations.
