Feb 21, (V7N) - Bangladesh’s ICC Champions Trophy campaign started on a disappointing note as they succumbed to a six-wicket defeat against India in their opening match at Dubai International Cricket Stadium.
Towhid Hridoy played a heroic innings, scoring a resilient 100 off 129 balls, but his efforts weren’t enough as Bangladesh were bowled out for 228 in 49.4 overs. The team had suffered an early collapse, stumbling to 35-5 within 8.3 overs after Mohammed Shami (5-53) and Axar Patel (2-43) wreaked havoc.
Jaker Ali Anik (68) provided much-needed support, stitching a 154-run stand with Hridoy to pull Bangladesh out of trouble. However, Shami’s return in the death overs ensured Bangladesh couldn’t push beyond 230, as he claimed Jaker and Taskin Ahmed late in the innings.
Chasing 229, India made light work of the target, reaching 231-4 in 46.3 overs. Shubman Gill led from the front with a well-crafted 101* off 129 balls, while Rohit Sharma (41 off 36) gave India an explosive start, ensuring there was no scoreboard pressure.
Bangladesh did manage a few breakthroughs through Rishad Hossain (2-38), Taskin Ahmed (1-40), and Mustafizur Rahman (1-44), but Gill remained composed alongside KL Rahul (41*), who guided India home with an unbeaten 87-run stand.
Bangladesh will face New Zealand on February 24 in Rawalpindi, looking to bounce back.
India will take on Pakistan in a high-voltage clash on February 23 at the same venue.
