ACCRA, Mar 31 (V7N) — In a dramatic move that has sent shockwaves through African football, the Ghana Football Association (GFA) announced the sacking of head coach Otto Addo on Tuesday. The decision comes only 72 days before the Black Stars are set to begin their 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign in North America.

The final straw for the GFA was a narrow 2-1 defeat to Germany in a friendly match held in Stuttgart on Monday night. Although Ghana held the former world champions to a 1-1 draw until the 88th minute, a late goal condemned the Black Stars to their fourth consecutive loss.

A Disastrous Run of Form

The GFA’s patience reportedly evaporated following a string of poor performances during the current international break and late 2025:

  • March 30: 2-1 loss to Germany (Stuttgart)

  • March 27: 5-1 humiliation by Austria (Vienna)

  • November 2025: Back-to-back losses against Japan and South Korea.

Despite successfully qualifying for the 2026 World Cup, Addo’s second tenure was marred by a failure to qualify for the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), a historic low for the four-time continental champions.

End of a Historic Tenure

Otto Addo holds a unique place in Ghanaian sports history as the first person to both play for and coach the national team at a World Cup (Qatar 2022). He returned to the role in March 2024 to lead the 2026 qualification campaign, but critics argued the team had lost its tactical identity under his leadership.

In a brief statement, the GFA expressed gratitude:

"The Association wishes to thank Otto Addo sincerely for his contribution to the team and wishes him the best of luck in his future endeavors. The GFA will communicate the new technical direction in due course."

The Road Ahead: Group L Challenges

Ghana faces a daunting task in Group L of the 2026 World Cup, which is being hosted across the USA, Canada, and Mexico. With the opening match just over two months away, the new coach will have little time to stabilize a squad featuring stars like Mohammed Kudus and Antoine Semenyo.

Ghana’s World Cup Schedule:

  • June 17: vs. Panama (Toronto, Canada)

  • June 22: vs. England

  • June 27: vs. Croatia

The GFA is expected to move quickly to appoint a successor, with rumors already circulating about potential domestic and European candidates capable of managing the high-pressure transition.
