Ace all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan has made a comeback to the Bangladesh T20 squad after nearly a year, as selectors included him in the final two matches against Zimbabwe. His last appearance was a Player-of-the-Match performance against Afghanistan in July 2023. However, due to an eye condition and a finger injury following the ODI World Cup in October-November 2023, Shakib's appearances were limited. Najmul Hossain Shanto has taken over the captaincy in all formats this year.
Although Bangladesh has already secured the five-match T20 series against Zimbabwe with a 3-0 lead, Shakib was rested for the first three matches in Chattogram. He played three matches in the Dhaka Premier League (DPL) to regain match fitness, displaying remarkable performance with both bat and ball. His inclusion in the squad for the last two matches against Zimbabwe was part of the plan to give him some game time before the T20 World Cup, according to selector Abdur Razzak.
Pacer Mustafizur Rahman, who has been in exceptional form in the Indian Premier League (IPL) for Chennai Super Kings, also returned to the squad for the last two matches against Zimbabwe after being rested for the first three.
To accommodate Shakib and Mustafizur in the team, Afif Hossain and Parvez Hossain Emon were dropped. However, Razzak clarified that both players are still in consideration for future matches.
Meanwhile, pacer Shoriful Islam was given rest to manage his workload after playing consistently in all three formats for the last two years. He was off-color in the first two matches against Zimbabwe and did not play the third match. The team management decided to rest him for the remainder of the series.
The squad for the last two T20 matches against Zimbabwe includes Najmul Hossain Shanto (Captain), Liton Das, Tanzid Hasan Tamim, Shakib Al Hasan, Tawhid Hridoy, Mahmudullah, Jaker Ali Anik, Mahedi Hasan, Rishad Hossain, Taskin Ahmed, Mustafizur Rahman, Tanzim Hasan Sakib, Soumya Sarkar, Tanvir Islam, and Mohammad Saifuddin.
