New Zealand secured a dominant nine-wicket victory over Uganda in a T20 World Cup Group C match in Trinidad on Friday, a clash between two already-eliminated teams. New Zealand's exit from the tournament was confirmed earlier by Afghanistan's victory over Papua New Guinea.
Uganda was restricted to a mere 40 runs all out in 18.4 overs, with Tim Southee delivering a standout performance, taking three wickets for just four runs, and Trent Boult contributing with 2-7.
In response, New Zealand comfortably reached their target in just 5.2 overs, losing only one wicket. Devon Conway led the scoring with an unbeaten 22, while Finn Allen was dismissed for nine. Uganda's poor bowling included six wides and a no-ball, aiding New Zealand's swift run chase.
Despite the victory, player of the match Tim Southee expressed disappointment over New Zealand's overall performance in the tournament. "Extremely disappointed to play ourselves out of the tournament," Southee said. "You look at the side, plenty of experience and we were not at our best in the first two games. We have a proud record in World Cups in the last ten years and it has now come to an end."
