France's meteorological agency has issued a weather warning for Paris and the surrounding areas due to storms and temperatures expected to reach highs of 35 degrees Celsius on Tuesday as the capital hosts the Olympic Games.

The agency has implemented a "yellow alert" -- the second of four levels -- as a heatwave moves in from southern France. This alert has been issued because the "very hot" conditions across Paris are forecast to persist overnight, with temperatures not expected to drop below 22 degrees Celsius between Tuesday and Wednesday.

Additionally, parts of southern France are on orange alert, the third-highest warning, with some locations experiencing temperatures pushing 40 degrees Celsius.

The yellow alert level advises people to "be attentive" to the impact of heat when engaging in sports or other physical activities. This scorching heat will be particularly challenging for Olympians competing in outdoor events during the afternoon in Paris and its surrounding suburbs. Events such as beach volleyball at the Eiffel Tower, BMX freestyle qualifiers at Place de la Concorde, and the women's rugby sevens semi-finals at the Stade de France are all partly or fully outdoors.

In the lead-up to the Games, some athletes had called for adjustments to event timings to mitigate the physical toll of competing in high temperatures and the risk of heatstroke.
