Cincinnati Reds shortstop Elly De La Cruz made history during the team's victory over the Toronto Blue Jays by becoming the fifth player since 1901 to achieve at least 60 stolen bases and 20 home runs in a single season. De La Cruz, who is just 22 years old, reached this milestone when he stole third base in the fifth inning, marking his 60th steal of the season. He then scored to tie the game at 6-6 and later hit his 22nd home run in the eighth inning, finishing the game with an impressive 3-for-4 performance as the Reds secured an 11-7 win.
By achieving this feat, De La Cruz joins an elite group of players, including two former Reds stars, Joe Morgan and Eric Davis. Morgan reached the 20/60 milestone twice, in 1973 and 1976, while Davis accomplished it in 1986. Baseball legend Rickey Henderson achieved this milestone three times with the New York Yankees in 1985 and 1986, and with the Oakland A's in 1990. The most recent player before De La Cruz to make the list was Ronald Acuña Jr. of the Atlanta Braves, who had 41 homers and 73 stolen bases in 2023.
De La Cruz's remarkable combination of power and speed has quickly made him one of the most exciting young players in Major League Baseball.
