Sept 26, V7N - The U.S. is set to notify Congress about a $5.6 billion drawdown from its weapons stocks for Ukraine, with specific details of the package still being finalized. This move comes as part of a broader plan to meet a September 30 deadline for delivering aid to Ukraine. The Biden administration is also preparing a separate $2.4 billion assistance package through the Ukraine Security Assistance Initiative, which enables the U.S. to purchase weapons for Ukraine from defense contractors rather than depleting its own inventory.

The $2.4 billion package is expected to include munitions, weapons to combat drones, and materials to support Ukraine's munitions production. Additionally, a $375 million aid package, announced earlier, will deliver the first Joint Standoff Weapon (a precision-guided bomb with an 81-mile range) to Ukraine. This weapon, dropped from fighter jets, is designed for high-accuracy strikes, although its use against targets within Russia has been restricted.

Congress has already approved nearly $175 billion in aid for Ukraine since the Russian invasion began, with many lawmakers anticipating the need for further financial support in the coming months to help sustain Ukraine's defense efforts against Russian advances.
