Stockholm, Oct 07 (V7N) — The prestigious Nobel Prize announcements for 2024 have commenced, with the first award in the category of Medicine being revealed on Monday morning. This year, the Nobel Prize in Medicine has been awarded jointly to Victor Ambrose and Gary Ravkun for their groundbreaking work on the discovery of microRNAs and post-transcriptional gene regulation.
The announcement was made by the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences at around 3:30 pm Bangladesh time, from Stockholm, Sweden. As is tradition, the Nobel Committee maintained strict secrecy regarding the laureates until the official reveal.
The Nobel announcements for various categories will continue until October 14, with all updates being published on the official Nobel Prize website. Last year, Kathleen Carrico and Drew Weissman were honoured with the Medicine Nobel for their contributions to the development of the mRNA COVID-19 vaccine.
Since 1901, the Nobel Prize, named after Swedish scientist Alfred Nobel, has been awarded to individuals and groups who make exceptional contributions to humanity in the fields of physics, chemistry, medicine, peace, and literature. In 1969, a sixth category, economics, was added.
Alfred Nobel, the inventor of dynamite, left his wealth to fund these awards, stipulating in his will that the prize should be given to those who benefit humanity in these fields.
