ROME, Nov 14, V7N- Italian President Sergio Mattarella criticized billionaire Elon Musk on Wednesday for intervening in Italy's contentious debate over migrant policy, urging the tech mogul to avoid "giving lessons" to the nation.
"Italy is a great democratic country... that knows how to look after itself while respecting its Constitution," Mattarella said in remarks widely interpreted as a direct response to Musk's comments. While Mattarella’s role is largely ceremonial, he is a respected figure in Italy's political and moral landscape.
The reprimand followed Musk’s social media criticism of a recent Italian court ruling that challenged a controversial deal with Albania regarding the processing of asylum seekers. Writing on X, the platform he owns, Musk declared, "These judges need to go."
Mattarella Defends Sovereignty
Although Mattarella did not mention Musk by name, he emphasized the importance of respecting national sovereignty. He also issued a pointed remark: "Anyone -- especially if they are preparing, as announced, to occupy an important role in the government of a friendly and allied country -- must respect (that country's) sovereignty and cannot make it his business to give lessons."
Musk has been tapped by former U.S. President Donald Trump to co-lead a newly proposed "Department of Government Efficiency" aimed at streamlining bureaucracy in Washington. Musk’s political involvement has further fueled controversy around his close ties with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and Deputy Prime Minister Matteo Salvini, known for their hardline stances on immigration.
Musk Doubles Down on Criticism
On Wednesday, Musk escalated his critique, describing the judges' ruling as "unacceptable" and questioning Italy's democratic integrity. "Do the people of Italy live in a democracy, or does an unelected autocracy make the decisions?" Musk wrote on X.
Later, Musk spoke with Prime Minister Meloni and expressed "respect" for Mattarella. However, a statement issued by Musk’s spokesperson to Italian news agency ANSA maintained his stance, highlighting that "freedom of speech is protected by the first amendment to the Italian Constitution."
Controversial Migration Deal
The legal dispute centers around a year-old agreement between Italy and Albania. The deal allows Italian authorities to transfer asylum seekers from "safe" countries to Albania for processing. Critics argue that the policy undermines asylum rights, and recent legal challenges have further complicated its implementation.
The public exchange between Mattarella and Musk highlights the growing tension over migration policies in Europe and the global scrutiny of Italy's approach. It also underscores the challenges posed by influential global figures commenting on national issues.
