Agartala, Dec 02 (V7N) The Bangladesh Assistant High Commission in Agartala, Tripura, came under attack and vandalism on Monday by leaders and activists of several local organizations. The incident sparked chaos and led to heightened security measures.

According to eyewitness accounts, the protesters initially gathered in front of the Gandhi statue at the Circuit House for a demonstration. After delivering speeches, a six-member delegation proceeded to the Assistant High Commission to submit a memorandum. Tensions escalated when the protesters forcibly entered the premises, causing significant damage to the building.

Security forces stationed at the High Commission attempted to restrain the intruders, but the situation quickly spiraled out of control. Additional forces from the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) were deployed to restore order. Eyewitnesses reported clashes between the security forces and the attackers, which created a sense of panic among the staff and visitors at the High Commission.

The attack in Agartala follows a similar incident in Kolkata on November 28, where clashes erupted in front of the Bangladesh Deputy Embassy on Bangabandhu Sarani. The reasons behind the protests remain unclear, but they appear to involve grievances against Bangladesh's diplomatic missions.

The Anti-Discrimination Movement, a prominent organization, condemned the attack and announced a protest march from Raju Statue at 9 PM on the same day. Hasnat Abdullah, convener of the movement, called for a peaceful demonstration to express solidarity and protest against the vandalism.

Following the incident, security at Bangladesh’s diplomatic missions across India has been tightened to prevent further unrest. Both local authorities and Bangladesh’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs have yet to release official statements regarding the incidents.

The repeated attacks on Bangladesh’s diplomatic establishments have raised concerns over the safety of its missions and personnel in India. Diplomatic efforts to address the root causes of these incidents are expected to follow.
