Kolkata, Jan 18 (V7N) — Sanjay Roy has been declared guilty of the rape and murder of an intern doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata. Judge Anirban Das delivered the verdict in a Sealdah court on Saturday, concluding a trial that has lasted 162 days since the brutal crime.

The judge stated that the maximum penalty for the crime is the death sentence, while the minimum is life imprisonment. However, the sentencing has been postponed to Monday.

During the 12-minute hearing, Judge Das addressed Sanjay Roy, stating, “You strangled the doctor, sexually assaulted her, and killed her.” The judge then asked Sanjay if he had anything to say.

Claiming innocence, Sanjay responded, “I am innocent. I am being framed. I did what the IPS officer said. I have a rudraksha necklace around my neck. If I had committed a crime, it would have torn.”

In response, the judge said, “I am satisfied with the evidence placed before me and what the CBI has said.”

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) presented strong evidence implicating Sanjay Roy, leading to his conviction under sections BNS 64 (rape), BNS 66 (rape and murder), and 103(1) (murder).

The heinous crime, which occurred 162 days ago, shocked the city of Kolkata and drew widespread condemnation. The court’s verdict marks a significant step in the pursuit of justice for the victim and her family.
