Traders in the UAE have slashed the prices of dates by 40% in preparation for the upcoming holy month of Ramadan. This significant reduction comes as a welcome relief for consumers gearing up for the traditional festivities. Khaleej Times reported on Thursday that both the Sharjah Waterfront Market and Jubail Market witnessed a noticeable decline in date prices compared to normal.

During a visit to these markets, it was observed that Majdul dates from Palestine, Jordan, and Saudi Arabia, which typically sold for 30 dirhams per kilogram, are now available at 20 dirhams per kilogram. Similarly, rutab dates, usually priced at 60 dirhams for 3 kilograms, are now being sold at a reduced rate of 45 dirhams. Ajwa dates, known for their premium quality, have seen a drop from 45 dirhams to 35 dirhams per kilogram. For budget-conscious buyers, Iranian Zaidi dates are a steal at just 5 dirhams per kilogram.

Mohammad Rais, a date seller at the Waterfront Market, expressed optimism about the surge in sales, noting that they are currently moving over 100 kilograms of dates daily, with expectations of reaching 500 kilograms per day in the coming weeks. Anjeel S, another vendor at the Waterfront Market, highlighted plans to introduce more date varieties from around the world to cater to diverse consumer preferences.

As demand for dates is expected to rise closer to Ramadan, residents are advised to take advantage of the current discounted prices, as there may be a potential 20% increase in prices as the festivities draw near. This reduction in date prices aligns with the spirit of Ramadan, making it more accessible for families to enjoy the traditional delicacies associated with the holy month.
