Washington, Mar 9 (V7N) – Secret Service personnel shot an armed man near the White House early Sunday morning, after receiving information about a suicidal individual potentially traveling from Indiana to Washington, D.C., authorities confirmed.
The incident occurred around midnight when Secret Service officers found the man’s parked vehicle and noticed a person on foot matching the description nearby. As officers approached, the suspect brandished a firearm, leading to an armed confrontation during which shots were fired by the Secret Service.
The suspect was taken to a local hospital, though his condition has not been disclosed. No other injuries were reported. President Donald Trump was not in Washington at the time of the incident.
The Metropolitan Police Department's Internal Affairs Division is investigating the shooting, as it does with all law enforcement officer-involved shootings in the district.
This incident follows a similar security breach last month when a man was arrested for attempting to scale the White House South Lawn fence. The Secret Service's response to that attempt has been under review.
Additionally, the Secret Service faced intense scrutiny following a failed assassination attempt at a rally in Pennsylvania last July, where Trump was injured. This led to the appointment of Sean Curran, who protected Trump during the incident, as the new head of the Secret Service.
