LONDON, March 14, (V7N) – Britain's Energy and Net Zero Secretary Ed Miliband will visit China this weekend to push for stronger climate commitments, marking the first UK energy ministerial visit to Beijing since 2017.
Miliband aims to urge China to take greater action in tackling the climate crisis and encourage both nations to uphold the Paris Agreement, especially as US President Donald Trump has withdrawn from the accord. He also plans to raise concerns over human rights issues in Hong Kong and the treatment of Uyghur minorities.
During the meetings, Miliband will invite Chinese officials to London later this year to restart formal UK-China climate dialogue, reinforcing Britain’s role in global climate cooperation. He emphasized that engaging China is essential for protecting future generations from climate threats.
Despite security and human rights concerns, Prime Minister Keir Starmer has pushed for greater engagement with China. While China remains the world’s largest carbon emitter, it is also a leader in renewable energy and has set a goal to reach net zero by 2060, whereas the UK targets full decarbonization by 2050.
