Ottawa, Mar 24 (V7N) – Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has called for a snap election to be held on April 28, urging Canadians to decide who should lead the country in facing the economic challenges ahead, particularly those created by President Donald Trump’s tariffs. Carney posted on X, stating, “We need to build the strongest economy in the G7. We need to deal with President Trump’s tariffs. Canadians deserve a choice about who should lead that effort for our country.”

Carney’s call for the election comes just nine days after he became Canada’s Prime Minister, following Justin Trudeau’s resignation announcement in January. Carney, a former governor of the Bank of Canada and the Bank of England, was selected as the new leader of the Liberal Party on March 9.

His rise to power coincides with increased tensions between the U.S. and Canada. President Trump has made several controversial remarks about Canada, including suggesting that the country could become the 51st U.S. state and threatening to impose 25% tariffs on Canadian imports. However, Trump reversed the tariff threat on March 11 following a significant drop in the stock market.

In his first speech as leader, Carney firmly rejected Trump’s suggestions, stating, “Canada never, ever, will be part of America in any way, shape, or form,” and emphasized the importance of addressing the nation’s future in the face of external threats.
