Lanzarote Apr 14 (V7N) — Spain’s Canary Islands have been severely impacted by flooding caused by torrential rains, with the island of Lanzarote bearing the brunt of the damage, Reuters reported.
The heavy downpour began on Saturday, with the Spanish Meteorological Department recording 6 centimeters of rain in just two hours. The deluge quickly overwhelmed drainage systems, leading to widespread flooding in hundreds of homes and on key roads, particularly in the towns of Arrecife and Teguise
Emergency services, led by Enrique Espinosa, reported receiving over 300 distress calls overnight. “Some houses are submerged, and what remains is covered in a lot of mud,” Espinosa stated. Rescue efforts continued through the night as responders worked to relocate trapped residents to safety.
Video footage circulating on social media and news platforms showed floodwaters gushing beneath bridges, cars stranded on submerged roads, and residents capturing the chaos from higher ground.
An emergency alert was initially issued due to the intensity of the storm but was lifted later once rains subsided. Fortunately, no casualties have been reported so far.
The authorities have urged residents to remain cautious as cleanup and recovery efforts are underway.
