Moscow, July 4 (V7N) — Russia has officially recognized the Taliban government in Afghanistan, becoming the first country in the world to do so. The Russian Foreign Ministry announced the decision in a statement on Thursday (July 3), according to a report by the Associated Press (AP).

This historic move follows the Kremlin’s acceptance of credentials from the Taliban-appointed Afghan ambassador to Moscow, marking formal diplomatic recognition of the Taliban administration.

Moscow’s recognition comes after the Russian Supreme Court lifted the terrorist designation against the Taliban in April. Analysts believe Russia’s decision is aimed at normalizing ties with Kabul for strategic, economic, and regional influence purposes.

Since the Taliban seized power in August 2021, no Western nation has recognized their government. The Taliban regime remains internationally controversial, facing widespread criticism over human rights abuses, the ban on women’s education, and the enforcement of radical policies.
