Aug 09, (V7N) – Russian President Vladimir Putin and U.S. President Donald Trump will hold a high-stakes meeting in Alaska on August 15 aimed at ending the war in Ukraine, Reuters reports.

President Trump announced the meeting on Friday during a press conference in the Oval Office, following the Armenia–Azerbaijan agreement. He indicated that Russia and Ukraine are “very close” to reaching a ceasefire deal. Later, in a post on Truth Social, he confirmed the planned meeting with Putin.

Kremlin aide Yuri Ushakov said the discussions will explore “various options” for achieving a long-term peaceful resolution to the Ukraine crisis.

Meanwhile, in an address to the nation on Friday evening, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said a ceasefire is possible if sufficient international pressure is applied to Moscow. He noted that he has held over a dozen discussions with world leaders, with his team maintaining constant contact with Washington.

Since beginning his second term in January, President Trump has taken several diplomatic initiatives to end the Moscow–Kyiv conflict, while also threatening new sanctions against Russia. Last Wednesday, U.S. Special Representative Steve Witkoff met with Putin in Moscow, with both sides calling the talks “fruitful.”
