Moscow, Oct 16 (V7N) — Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa has expressed his commitment to advancing a new phase of relations with Russia, pledging to uphold all previous agreements between the two nations.

President al-Sharaa made the remarks after a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow on Wednesday (October 15). This marks al-Sharaa’s first official visit to Russia since assuming power in Syria.

During the meeting, both leaders discussed enhancing cooperation in various sectors, reaffirming their mutual intention to deepen bilateral relations.

“It is our priority to continue and strengthen the historic partnership between Moscow and Damascus,” President al-Sharaa said, emphasizing Syria’s readiness to move forward with renewed cooperation.

Political observers, however, believe that al-Sharaa’s visit may also be aimed at negotiating the possible return of former Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, who has been living in exile in Moscow since his ouster.

President Putin, known for his close ties with Assad, reaffirmed Russia’s continued support for peace and stability in Syria, according to diplomatic sources.
