Goa, Dec 07 (V7N) — A devastating fire at a popular nightclub in the Indian tourist state of Goa has claimed the lives of at least 23 people, authorities confirmed.
The blaze erupted just past midnight on Saturday at a nightclub located in the Arpora area. According to an initial police statement, the fire began after a gas cylinder exploded in the club’s kitchen, rapidly spreading throughout the building.
Fire service personnel battled the flames for several hours before bringing the situation under control. Rescue operations continued until Sunday morning.
Officials believe that most of the victims were staff members, though several tourists and local residents were also among the casualties.
The Chief Minister of Goa has expressed deep sorrow over the tragic incident and assured that a thorough investigation is underway to determine the exact cause of the explosion and assess possible negligence.
