Tehran, Jan 15 (V7N) — Iranian authorities have denied reports that Erfan Soltani, who was arrested during recent anti-government protests in Iran, has been sentenced to death, following widespread media claims that he was to be hanged.
Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said there are no plans to execute protesters, stressing that the death penalty is not being applied in such cases. “There is no plan for retaliation against protesters, and hanging is not even under consideration,” he said.
Earlier on Thursday morning, Iranian state media, cited by Reuters, reported that Erfan Soltani could be executed soon. However, the report later said the execution had not taken place, adding to the confusion surrounding the case.
Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump also addressed the issue, claiming that the killing of protesters in Iran has stopped. Speaking to reporters, Trump said, “We have been told that the killings in Iran have stopped and there are no plans to carry out the death penalty. A very important source on the other side has given us this information. We will look into it.”
President Trump has repeatedly expressed support for the Iranian people amid ongoing protests and unrest across the country.
According to international human rights organizations, at least 3,428 people have been killed and more than 10,000 arrested since the protests began. Iranian authorities have not officially confirmed these figures.
In recent days, the overall situation in Iran appears to have somewhat stabilized following weeks of unrest and violence. Supporters of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei have taken to the streets in several areas, while the government has moved to reassert control and restrict protest activities.
Despite official denials, uncertainty remains as international attention continues to focus on Iran’s handling of detainees and the broader human rights situation.
