Elon Musk, the CEO of social media platform X, is facing a double legal threat in Brazil. Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes opened an investigation into Musk for allegedly obstructing justice and inciting crime by publicly criticizing the court's orders to block certain accounts.

Moraes accuses Musk of instrumentalizing X as part of a network spreading disinformation and threats against the court. This comes amidst a larger probe into "digital militias" targeting Brazilian justices.

Musk, a self-proclaimed free speech advocate, has vowed to defy the court orders and lift restrictions on blocked accounts. He claims these demands violate Brazilian law and represent an attack on free speech.

Justice Moraes, however, maintains his decisions are necessary to combat the spread of fake news and threats to democracy, especially in light of the January 8th, 2023 uprising in Brasilia.

The situation has become politically charged, with supporters of former President Jair Bolsonaro accusing Moraes of overstepping his bounds.

Meanwhile, Brazil's Attorney General called for urgent regulation of social media platforms, arguing that foreign billionaires should not be able to dictate terms and disregard the rule of law.
