Amidst the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, the United States has leveled serious accusations against Russia, alleging the use of chemical weapons. Washington claims that Moscow's deployment of the asphyxiating agent chloropicrin gas constitutes a flagrant violation of international law. However, the Kremlin has vehemently denied these allegations, dismissing them as unfounded.

Speaking to reporters in Moscow, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov emphasized Russia's adherence to international obligations, including the strict prohibition of prohibited weapons and chemicals. Peskov refuted the US State Department's assertions, asserting that they lack credibility and are baseless.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, the US State Department condemned Russia's purported use of chloropicrin gas and tear gas against Ukrainian forces on the battlefield. The deployment of such chemical agents, according to the US, constitutes a breach of the international ban on chemical weapons. The alleged use of these chemicals by Russian forces is purportedly aimed at dislodging Ukrainian troops from defensive positions and gaining tactical advantage.

Chloropicrin, a chemical agent notorious for its harmful effects on the respiratory system, eyes, and skin, was widely employed as a weapon during World War I. Although its military use is prohibited, it continues to be utilized in agricultural settings. Russia, however, has consistently denied accusations of employing chemical weapons in warfare.

Survivors of the alleged gas attacks recounted harrowing experiences, detailing symptoms such as burns on the face, throat irritation, and skin rashes. Ukraine's military authorities claim to have documented over 1,000 instances of Russia's purported use of tear gas derived from banned chemical weapons.

The Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW), headquartered in The Hague, categorizes chloropicrin as a prohibited asphyxiant. Its use as a chemical weapon dates back to World War I, with Germany being the first to deploy it in warfare.
