Ukraine's Security Service (SBU) has claimed to have foiled an assassination attempt on President Volodymyr Zelensky orchestrated by Russia. According to reports from the BBC on Tuesday (May 7), the SBU disclosed that two Ukrainian security officers have been arrested in connection with the plot.

The detained individuals, identified as two colonels, are allegedly linked to Russia's State Security Service and have been accused of leaking classified information to Moscow. The SBU further asserted that the plan also involved targeting other high-ranking military officials.

The SBU's investigation revealed that Russian operatives sought to exploit one of President Zelensky's bodyguards to carry out the assassination. The agency claimed that Russia planned to execute the attack using drones and rockets.

This development comes amid longstanding tensions between Ukraine and Russia, with Kiev previously accusing Moscow of multiple attempts to assassinate President Zelensky. The thwarted plot underscores the ongoing security challenges facing Ukraine and the strained relations between the two neighboring countries.
