Slovakian Prime Minister Robert Fico has undergone another surgery as part of his treatment for a gunshot wound sustained in an assassination attempt earlier this week. Deputy Prime Minister Robert Kalinak confirmed that the surgery lasted two hours on Friday, expressing optimism about Fico's recovery, as reported by Reuters.

Prime Minister Fico was attacked by a gunman on Wednesday afternoon while leaving a government meeting. He was quickly transported to a hospital in Banska Bystrica, where he has been receiving medical care.

In a press briefing, Deputy Prime Minister Kalinak stated that no decision has been made yet regarding Fico’s potential transfer from Banska Bystrica to the capital, Bratislava. Kalinak mentioned that such a decision will depend on further improvement in Fico's health condition.

Kalinak shared that Fico’s health is showing signs of improvement. "We will need a few more days to know for sure where Fico's health is going," he told reporters outside the hospital. He added that Friday's surgery provided a positive outlook on Fico's recovery.

Miriam Lapunikova, the director of the hospital, confirmed that Fico regained consciousness following the surgery and his condition is stable.

In connection with the assassination attempt, Slovak police have filed charges of attempted murder against a detained 71-year-old suspect. The accused is a former security guard at a shopping mall and the author of three poetry collections. However, local media reports indicate that the suspect’s identity has not yet been officially confirmed by Slovak authorities.

This incident has sent shockwaves through Slovakia, highlighting concerns about political violence in the country. The government has assured the public of a thorough investigation and measures to ensure the safety of its officials.
