Brussels, (June 9, 2024) – In a tearful announcement on Sunday evening, Belgian Prime Minister Alexander De Croo revealed his decision to resign from office. His emotional address followed disappointing outcomes in both the European Union (EU) Parliament and domestic elections.

De Croo expressed deep sadness over the outcome of the recent elections, stating, "This is a very difficult evening." The EU Parliament elections, along with central and regional elections in Belgium, saw significant gains for the far-right Vlaams Belang Party. However, the ruling coalition led by De Croo fell short of its anticipated performance.

Facing the prospect of losing the majority in the ruling coalition, De Croo made the difficult decision to step down as Prime Minister. He emphasized the clear message sent by the voters and extended congratulations to the New Flemish Alliance, Vlaams Belang Party, and the Vooruit Party.

Prime Minister De Croo's resignation will take effect from Monday, June 10. He assumed office in October 2020 and has been at the helm during a challenging period for Belgium, both domestically and within the EU. His departure marks a significant development in Belgian politics, with implications for the country's future leadership and governance.
