Washington, D.C. (13 June 2024) – In a significant policy shift, the United States has announced the lifting of sanctions on Ukraine's Azov Battalion, a radical armed group, as part of its efforts to bolster Ukraine's defense against Russian aggression. This decision enables the controversial battalion to receive weapons and training from Washington, despite its checkered past involving accusations of atrocities, including looting. Russia has vehemently criticized the move.

The Azov Brigade, a special force within Ukraine's paramilitary structure, comprises several thousand members.
