Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy stated on Tuesday that the ongoing war with Russia will ultimately conclude through dialogue, but emphasized that Ukraine must be in a strong position to negotiate effectively. He plans to present a comprehensive strategy to U.S. President Joe Biden and his potential successors, which includes not only military actions but also economic and diplomatic initiatives. Zelenskiy highlighted Ukraine's recent incursion into Russia's Kursk region as a key component of this strategy, aimed at compelling Russia to end the conflict on terms favorable to Ukraine.
During a news conference in Kyiv, Zelenskiy expressed his desire for a fair resolution to the war, which began with Russia's full-scale invasion in February 2022. He indicated that he hopes to visit the United States in September for the U.N. General Assembly and is preparing for discussions with Biden, as well as with Vice President Kamala Harris and likely Republican nominee **Donald Trump. Zelenskiy sees a follow-up international summit on peace as a potential forum for talks, where Ukraine would like Russia to participate.
Despite the ongoing military actions, including Ukraine's claims of capturing over 100 settlements in the Kursk region, Zelenskiy remains firm that there can be no compromises with Russian President Vladimir Putin. He criticized Putin's approach, which he believes seeks to dictate terms to Ukraine, and reiterated that dialogue with Russia is currently "empty and meaningless" due to Russia's unwillingness to engage in diplomatic solutions. Zelenskiy also noted that Ukraine is making strides in domestic weapons production, having recently tested a domestically-produced ballistic missile.
