United States, Aug 29(v7n)- Robert Telles, a former Las Vegas politician, was sentenced to life in prison on Wednesday for the murder of investigative journalist Jeff German. Telles, who served as the Clark County public administrator, was found guilty of stabbing German to death in September 2022, following a series of critical articles that the journalist had written about his conduct in office. The jury's verdict came after a two-week trial, during which it was revealed that Telles had laid in wait outside German's home before launching a fatal attack. German, a 69-year-old reporter for the Las Vegas Review-Journal, had reported on a toxic work environment in Telles's office, including allegations of favoritism and inappropriate relationships. Telles lost his reelection bid shortly after these articles were published.During the trial, Telles denied the charges, claiming he was the victim of a conspiracy and that police had overlooked evidence pointing to other suspects. However, the jury found him guilty of first-degree murder, leading to a life sentence with the possibility of parole after 20 years.Clark County prosecutor Steve Wolfson emphasized the importance of the verdict, stating, "Justice has been served," and warned against any attempts to intimidate or silence journalists. The case has drawn significant attention, highlighting ongoing concerns about press safety and the dangers faced by journalists in their pursuit of accountability. In the wake of the verdict, Glenn Cook, executive editor of the Las Vegas Review-Journal, remarked that the jury's decision provided "a measure of justice for Jeff German," who was dedicated to holding public officials accountable. The murder of German is part of a troubling trend, as the Committee to Protect Journalists reports that 15 media workers have been killed in the United States in connection with their work since 1992.
