Faridpur, Apr 08 (V7N) – At least five people were killed and more than 30 injured when a passenger bus overturned in the Joyair area of Faridpur Sadar Upazila on the Faridpur-Barisal highway on Tuesday.

According to eyewitnesses, the accident occurred when a local passenger bus traveling from Muksudpur to Faridpur via Nagarkanda lost control and hit an electricity pole on the roadside. The impact caused the bus to overturn violently, with the pole reportedly piercing into the bus by nearly seven to eight feet, resulting in multiple fatalities.

The deceased include two women and three men, though their identities have not yet been confirmed.

Md. Mohsin, Assistant Superintendent of Police stationed at Faridpur Medical College Hospital, confirmed the death toll.

Local residents quickly rushed to the scene and began rescuing the injured passengers. Emergency responders, including personnel from the Faridpur Fire Service, arrived shortly after and helped extract several people who were trapped underneath the overturned vehicle.

Mohammad Nazrul Islam, Senior Station Officer of Faridpur Fire Service Station, said, “On receiving the call, we immediately dispatched a team to the spot and rescued those trapped under the bus. All the injured were transported to Faridpur Medical College Hospital for treatment.”

The condition of several of the injured is reported to be critical.

Authorities have launched an investigation into the cause of the accident. Preliminary reports suggest reckless driving may have contributed to the loss of control.

This tragic incident has once again raised concerns over road safety standards and vehicle maintenance on regional highways across the country.
