Jhalkhati, Dec 13 (V7N)- Farmers in the Banshbunia block of Jhalakathi's Kantalia upazila have turned to gourd cultivation, which is yielding high profits with relatively low costs. The cultivation of gourd has spread across hundreds of acres of land on both sides of the Banshbunia crop protection dam in Amua union. The favorable weather conditions have led to a bountiful harvest, and farmers are benefiting from good market prices.

A visit to the Banshbunia area on Friday, December 13, revealed rows of gourd plants growing along the dam's edges. Farmers have built bamboo and wire platforms where hundreds of gourds are hanging, ready to be harvested and sold. Many farmers are sitting in the fields, selling their fresh produce directly to the market.

Good Yields and Prices
Md. Shaharum Hawlader, a farmer from Banshbunia village, shared that the use of fertilizers, seeds, pesticides, nets, and the support from the local agriculture office have all contributed to the successful cultivation. He reported that gourds are selling for Tk 90 to 120 each in the market, and the demand is high.

"Locals are stopping by to admire the gourd plants along the road and many have shown interest in purchasing them. This proves that with proper planning and hard work, even small plots of land can produce great results," said Md. Hawlader.

Agricultural Support and Success
Md. Hasibur Rahman, the Deputy Assistant Agriculture Officer in charge of the Banshbunia block, mentioned that the agriculture office has provided all necessary assistance and guidance to the farmers. The favorable weather has further supported their success, and the farmers are making good income from their gourd sales.

Imran Bin Islam, the Upazila Agriculture Officer, noted that more farmers are getting interested in gourd cultivation due to its high profitability. The Agriculture Office continues to provide comprehensive support, encouraging more local farmers to adopt this profitable farming practice.
