RAJSHAHI, Mar 17, (V7N) — Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has extended Eid‑ul‑Fitr gifts to sanitation workers of Rajshahi City Corporation (RCC), marking the first time cleaners in the city have received direct financial support from the head of government.

At a ceremony held Tuesday at the Green Plaza of Nagar Bhaban, RCC Administrator Md. Mahfuzur Rahman Riton handed over Tk 5,000 each to 1,237 sanitation workers, totaling Tk 61.85 lakh. Officials said the initiative reflects the Prime Minister’s pledge to prioritize welfare measures for grassroots workers.

Speaking as chief guest, Administrator Riton expressed gratitude to the Prime Minister, noting that “never before has such an Eid gift been given to sanitation workers.” He added that the Prime Minister had entrusted him with the responsibility of making Rajshahi “more beautiful and developed.”

The administrator also highlighted broader initiatives, including the re‑digging of canals to aid farmers, distribution of family cards to five crore citizens over five years, and honorariums for imams, muazzins, and khadems. “Before the ink stains of the vote dry, the Prime Minister has started implementing his election promises,” Riton said.

The event was presided over by RCC Chief Executive Officer Md. Rezaul Karim, with Chief Cleaning Officer Sheikh Md. Mamun delivering the welcome speech. Rajshahi Metropolitan BNP President Mamun Or Rashid, RCC Secretary Sohel Rana, and acting Superintending Engineer Ahmed Al Moin Parag were among those present.

Sanitation workers expressed joy at receiving the support. “I have never received such a grant in my working life. We are very happy,” said worker Rajibul Islam. Others, including Maryam and Sumaiya, said the donation eased their worries about Eid expenses. Cleaner Harunur Rashid added that the gift would encourage them in their daily work.

Officials confirmed that the program was part of a wider effort to strengthen civic services and development in Rajshahi, with future projects aimed at making the city “clean, green, and prosperous.”
