A bumper crop of boro rice has been produced in the saline land of Khulna's coastal region of Koira Upazila this year. A smile appeared on the farmer's face.
Along with Sidor, the people of the town of Koira, which had been destroyed by cyclones, were living a half-life.
In Koira Upazila, the highly saline land used to cultivate only Bagda shrimps. But due to frequent natural calamities, diseases occur in the shrimps. Farmers became destitute.
As a result, farmers came forward to cultivate boro rice.
Koira Sadar, Bagali, Maharajpur, Maheshwaripur of Koira Upazila and Amadi Union were seen field after field of ripe boro paddy. And some farmers are preparing to harvest rice. And some have started harvesting paddy.
Many have started threshing rice in their own backyard.
Talking to the farmers, it is known that the yield of rice has been good since the weather has been favorable from planting to harvesting. Rafiq Dhali of Koira, Raghunath Das of Maharajpur, Rahima of Amadi, Sobhan Sheikh of Bagali said that if there is no rain or kalbaisakhi for 8/10 days, the paddy farmers of Koira are expecting a bumper crop.
Farooq Hossain, Deputy Assistant Agricultural Work Officer of Koira Agriculture Extension Department, said that the total cropland in Koira Upazila is 17274 hectares. The fallow area this year was 7288 hectares. This time the preparation of boro plantation was on 4925 hectares of land. However, more than 300 hectares of land has been cultivated. A total of 5725 hectares of land has been cultivated with Boro rice.
Upazila Agriculture Director Abdullah Al Mamun said that Koira mainly lives by farming shrimps in the brackish water area and by exploiting the Sundarab. But due to frequent natural calamities in this area, people are at war with nature to survive. But they are getting profit by cultivating watermelon and boro paddy for two years. And the smile on the farmer's face.
