Khagrachari, April 8 (V7N) – A grand procession marked the celebration of Baisabi, the prominent social festival of the Chittagong Hill Tracts, in Khagrachari. The event showcased the rich culture and traditions of the indigenous hill communities.

To welcome the new year and bid farewell to the old one, people from the Chakma, Marma, and Tripura communities participated in the procession, dressed in their traditional attire, jewelry, and musical instruments. The procession began at 9:30 AM from Chengi Square in the city. It was organized by the Universal Baisabi Celebration Committee, in honor of several hill festivals including Biju, Sangrai, Baisu-Sangrai, Changkran, and more.

Local residents expressed their excitement as they participated in the procession, which ended at the New Zealand Field. After the procession, Tripura community members performed the Gariya dance.

A two-week-long fair has been set up at New Zealand Field in celebration of Baisabi, where visitors can find traditional clothes, jewelry, and food. The organizers stated that such initiatives will continue every year to preserve the unique traditions, culture, and heritage of the communities.

Members of the Universal Baisabi Celebration Committee highlighted that the event was organized to preserve their culture. More than 1,500 people participated in the procession, including members of the Chakma, Marma, Tripura, and Santal communities. Additionally, Murong artists from Bandarban also joined the procession to add to its vibrancy.

In order to maintain law and order during the celebrations, the police administration has heightened security measures. Khagrachhari Sadar Police Station’s Officer-in-Charge, Mohammad Abdul Baten Mirdha, mentioned, "Various events, including the fair, procession, and traditional sports, are taking place in celebration of Baisabi. The police have taken extra precautions, and we hope to successfully conclude the festivities."
