Dhaka, Oct 1 (V7N): The government has lauded Chief Adviser (CA) Professor Muhammad Yunus' participation at the 79th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) as a "highly successful and historic milestone."

During a media briefing at the Foreign Service Academy on Monday, Chief Adviser's Press Secretary, Shafiqul Alam, emphasized the significance of the visit, describing it as a "very successful and historic visit, marking a positive milestone."

Alam noted that during Prof Yunus' brief four-day stay in New York, he participated in nearly 50 meetings, including at least 12 engagements with prominent global leaders, such as US President Joe Biden.

When asked about the upcoming operations of the six reform commissions, Alam mentioned that the Council of Advisers, led by the CA, aims to engage in discussions with political parties before the commissions begin their work, anticipated from October 1.

"Prof Yunus was treated like a 'rockstar' in New York," Alam remarked. "At the UN Headquarters, he couldn't move without a world leader eagerly approaching to greet him."

In addition to high-level meetings, Prof Yunus actively promoted the goals of the student-led revolution in social circles, where he became the top celebrity figure, not missing any opportunity to advocate for the movement’s objectives.

The Chief Adviser returned to Dhaka early Sunday following his productive visit, which was marked by several high-profile meetings and engagements. Alam mentioned that Yunus participated in 50 major events on the sidelines of the UNGA, with 16 of these taking place on September 26.

During his address at the 79th session of the UNGA—his first since leading the interim government in Bangladesh—Prof Yunus called upon the global community to engage with the "new Bangladesh," which strives to uphold freedom and democracy for all. Speaking in Bangla, he highlighted the determination of the country’s youth to ensure freedom, dignity, and equal rights for all.

In what Alam described as an "epoch-making speech," Prof Yunus invited countries worldwide to collaborate with Bangladesh in its pursuit of democracy, equality, the rule of law, and prosperity. The speech covered a broad range of global and regional issues, alongside Bangladesh’s internal matters.
