Dhaka, Oct 07 (V7N) — The Post, Telecommunication, and Information Adviser, Nahid Islam, announced on Friday that a Media Reform Commission would be formed following discussions among all relevant parties. Speaking at a free discussion on the topic of "Why and How to Reform the Media" held at the National Press Club, Nahid emphasised the importance of stakeholder consensus in the process.
"The commission will work based on input from all media stakeholders to ensure that the reforms meet the needs of the sector," said Nahid Islam. He highlighted the pressing issue of media workers' salaries, stating that this matter requires immediate attention. "There is no place for subjugation when it comes to dealing with media professionals," he added.
Nahid also addressed the role of the mass media in covering significant events, specifically pointing out that electronic media did not provide information on the student movement's shutdown. "I understand the reasons why this was not possible," he commented, noting the need for transparency in advertising across newspapers.
In closing, the adviser expressed optimism about the future of journalism in Bangladesh, stressing the need for professionalism. "We must look forward and focus on how to make journalism a viable profession. Young people are concerned about this, and for a truly free press, professionalism is essential."
The discussion was attended by Chief Adviser’s Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam, PIB Director General Farooq Wasif, and other prominent journalists.
