Dhaka, Oct 10 (V7N): Bangladesh is expected to host multiple high-profile visits from the United Nations this year, including a likely visit from UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk later this month, according to officials from Dhaka and New York.

These visits are attributed to two key reasons: the recent establishment of an interim government and Bangladesh's celebration of 50 years as a UN member. Volker Türk reached out to Bangladesh’s Interim Government Chief Adviser, Professor Muhammad Yunus, in a phone call this August.

During a recent visit to New York, Chief Adviser Prof Yunus called on Bangladesh’s international allies to support the country’s new journey towards a prosperous future, emphasizing that Bangladesh must seize the opportunity to rebuild and move forward.

Bangladesh joined the UN as a full member on September 17, 1974. In connection with this milestone, an advance team from the UN Human Rights Office visited Bangladesh from August 22-29, holding discussions with various groups, including student leaders from the recent protests, senior government advisors, the Chief Justice, security personnel, lawyers, journalists, human rights defenders, political party representatives, and minority groups.

Previously, Chief Adviser Prof Yunus officially invited the UN human rights chief to conduct an impartial fact-finding mission regarding alleged human rights violations between July 1 and August 15. A fact-finding team from the UN has already been deployed to assess these incidents, with plans to report on violations, identify root causes, and provide recommendations for justice and long-term reforms.

Once Volker Türk arrives in Bangladesh, he is expected to meet with Chief Adviser Prof Yunus, Foreign Adviser Md Touhid Hossain, and other key stakeholders.
