Dhaka, Oct 12 (V7N): The Maha Navami Puja, marking the second-to-last day of the Sharadiyo Durgotsab, will be observed on Saturday. Devotees believe that this day showcases Goddess Durga in her full divine splendor, with offerings made to various deities, symbolizing fire.

Throughout the country, mandaps (pandals) will be filled with a sense of impending farewell for the goddess, as Maha Navami marks a significant moment in the festival. In the evening, the grand “Maha Aarti” will take place, followed by rituals such as animal sacrifice and the Navami Homa (fire sacrifice).

Maha Navami commences right after the conclusion of the "Sandhi Puja." As part of the ceremonies, 108 lotus flowers will be offered to the goddess. After the puja, devotees will offer their Anjali (prayers) and receive prasad.

Although the festivities are in full swing, there will be an underlying sadness as devotees prepare to bid farewell to the goddess. According to the Sri Sri Chandi, a Hindu text, Goddess Durga, in her Rudra (Kali) form, defeated the demon Mahishasura and his warriors Chand, Mund, and Raktabija on this day.

The Navami Tithi begins with the Sandhi Puja, which is performed during the final 24 minutes of Ashtami and the initial 24 minutes of Navami. During this sacred time, Goddess Chamunda is honored with 108 clay lamps and 108 lotus flowers offered at her feet.

This year’s autumn Durgotsab began on Wednesday with Maha Sasthi and will conclude on Sunday with the immersion of the idols on Vijayadashami. According to the calendar, both Maha Navami and Vijayadashami will be celebrated on the same day, with Vijayadashami rituals starting after the completion of Maha Navami Puja.

The Maha Navami Kalparambha and Vihit Puja of Devi Durga will take place between 6 AM and 12 PM, followed by the Darpan consecration and Vijayadashami Puja starting at 8:26 AM.

In the evening, devotees will gather for garlanding, prasad distribution, and Bhog Aarti. Additionally, an Aarti competition will be held at the Dhakeshwari National Temple.
