Dhaka, Oct 27 (V7N)- Md Nahid Islam, the Adviser for Posts, Telecommunications, and Information Technology, stated Sunday that the interim government is focused on creating a conducive environment to attract foreign investments, aiming to boost job opportunities in Bangladesh.
“The interim government is working to establish a favorable climate to draw various international companies to Bangladesh, promoting employment through such investments,” Nahid said during a meeting with South Korean Ambassador Park Young-Sik at his office in the Posts and Telecommunications Division, as per an official press release.
He also emphasized that reform initiatives are in progress, including economic restructuring measures. Ambassador Park noted that South Korea is the fourth largest investor in Bangladesh, with major players like Samsung and LG operating here. However, he highlighted that increased production costs, primarily due to higher tax rates, are impacting these businesses.
Park suggested combating the presence of unauthorized mobile devices by implementing the National Equipment Identity Register (NEIR) and proposed a potential joint venture with Bangladesh for this purpose. In response, Nahid assured that tax-related matters would be reviewed by the National Board of Revenue (NBR) as part of the ongoing economic reform efforts to minimize any negative impacts.
Secretary of the ICT Division, Shish Haider Chowdhury, expressed intentions to support the growth of local manufacturing industries. Additionally, Dr. Md Mushfiqur Rahman, Secretary of Posts and Telecommunications, encouraged South Korean investment in Telephone Shilpa Sangstha Limited, a state-owned telecommunications company.
The meeting was attended by Deputy Chief of Mission Jin-hee Baek, Samsung Bangladesh Country Manager Hwansung Woo, and other relevant officials.
