Khosla, reflecting on Yunus’s leadership, expressed optimism about Bangladesh's future under his stewardship, describing Yunus as a friend he has admired for decades. Yunus assumed his interim role on August 5, three days after Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s departure from Bangladesh, upon the urging of student leaders central to the recent student-led movement.
Khosla highlighted Yunus’s track record in poverty alleviation, healthcare, education, and environmental sustainability, exemplified by his Grameen Bank initiative and his innovative models for rural economic development. He credited Yunus with pioneering ventures such as the introduction of cell phone services to rural women, solar home systems, and clean cook stoves that enhanced rural livelihoods across Bangladesh.
Yunus’s recent appointment, leading the eighth most populous country, is a challenging shift from his social entrepreneurship work. Yet, according to Khosla, Yunus has already demonstrated positive impacts. In his first two months, Yunus focused on restoring law and order, protecting minority rights, strengthening ties with India, encouraging the revitalization of SAARC, and addressing the nation’s banking sector turmoil. During the UN General Assembly, he met with over 50 global leaders to discuss Bangladesh’s potential on the world stage.
Khosla emphasized Yunus’s commitment to consensus-building, inclusivity, and practical solutions, noting that Yunus remains energetic in his role despite being 84. However, he acknowledged obstacles, particularly resistance from factions tied to previous administrations and long-standing political opposition.
In September, Khosla, along with 198 international leaders and 92 Nobel laureates, publicly expressed support for Yunus. They praised his enduring dedication to social progress, urging the global community to back his mission.
Khosla concluded that Yunus’s success would not only benefit Bangladesh but also strengthen its alliance with India, serving shared regional interests. He emphasized that all parties invested in regional stability should support Yunus’s continued progress for Bangladesh’s advancement.
