Dhaka, Oct 29 (V7N)- Law Affairs Adviser Dr. Asif Nazrul stated today that abolishing the death penalty is currently impractical, citing Bangladesh's longstanding legal framework and ongoing trials connected to recent incidents. His remarks were made during a meeting with United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Turk.
Dr. Nazrul emphasized that the death penalty has been part of Bangladesh’s legal system for over a century, pointing out that numerous trials are underway for individuals accused of killing thousands during recent movements. He noted that the immediate elimination of capital punishment would not align with current societal conditions. "Any major legal shift should take into account the public’s expectations," he stated.
He added that the United Nations Human Rights Commission is actively involved in legal reform efforts aimed at enhancing the acceptance of trials under International Criminal Tribunal law. The Commission has pledged to provide support, particularly in forensic analysis, technical guidance, and capacity building, according to Nazrul.
Dr. Nazrul assured the UN rights chief that tribunal proceedings are impartial and focused on justice rather than retribution. He stressed that the process is transparent and open to observers.
When asked about any discussion on upcoming elections, Nazrul clarified that the topic was not addressed during the meeting.
