Dhaka, Nov 01, (V7N)- As the world marks the International Day to End Impunity for Crimes against Journalists on November 2, concerns over press freedom and the safety of media professionals are more pressing than ever. Volker Türk, the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, has issued a powerful call for governments to bolster protections for journalists and ensure accountability for attacks against them.

Türk emphasized the urgent need for states to enact laws that defend freedom of expression and hold perpetrators accountable. “We live in troubled times, and effective journalism is more important than ever,” he stated, underscoring that a free press is essential for a vibrant society and crucial for democratic governance. It also plays a vital role in revealing the human consequences of violence and conflict, countering the troubling trend of dehumanization.

On this significant day, Türk urged influential figures and institutions to take decisive action against the impunity that often shields those who commit violence against journalists. He called for a collective effort to foster open, just societies where truth can thrive and media professionals can operate safely.
