Dhaka, Nov 04 (V7N)- Home Affairs Adviser Lt Gen (retd) Jahangir Alam Chowdhury stated on Monday that while the law and order situation in the country has improved slightly, it is still "not satisfactory" and requires further enhancement. He acknowledged the challenges faced by new police personnel in Dhaka, emphasizing the need for time to adapt to the city’s layout and establish their intelligence networks.

"We are in the process of changing nearly all police personnel in Dhaka. It will take time for them to learn the city’s map and build their intelligence," he remarked while addressing reporters after visiting the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) headquarters in Pilkhana. He urged the public to be patient as improvements are underway.

Chowdhury noted that the BGB has also undergone significant changes, contributing to the gradual enhancement of the security situation. "Criminals will not be tolerated, regardless of their influence. Historically, many powerful criminals have escaped justice, and we cannot let that continue," he asserted.

The adviser highlighted the importance of fostering a positive relationship between the BGB and the community, particularly given their role at the borders. He stressed the necessity of preventing the smuggling of illegal goods, including phensedyl, stating, "We must ensure that this does not happen, as these substances inflict serious harm on our nation."

In response to questions about the BGB's efforts to manage the influx of Rohingyas, Jahangir emphasized that while infiltration is prohibited, humanitarian considerations must also be addressed. "There is ongoing violence in that area. We do send some back, but it's true that a number manage to enter," he explained, acknowledging the current Rohingya population of approximately 1.3 million.

Regarding the 2009 BDR mutiny, he indicated that a reinvestigation of the killings is forthcoming. "An investigation team will be established soon. Similar incidents are being reopened, and this case will be handled in the same manner," he stated, without providing further details on the potential outcomes.
