Dhaka, Nov 15 (V7N)- Between January and September this year, political violence across the country claimed the lives of 254 people, with 8,296 others injured, according to a quarterly human rights report released on Friday by Odhikar.
The report highlights that the deadliest period occurred between August 1 and 5, during which 93 people lost their lives in political violence. Following the ousting of the Awami League government on August 5, a student-led uprising saw 52 deaths between August 9 and September 30 under the interim government.
Odhikar's findings also indicate that 1,581 individuals were victims of extrajudicial killings from July to August, as reported by the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement and the National Citizen Committee. These killings accounted for the total deaths from massacres during that time.
The report, compiled using data from human rights activists and media sources, is divided into three parts:
- Part A examines significant events under Sheikh Hasina's authoritarian rule from July 1 to August 5, 2024.
- Part B focuses on events during the interim government's tenure from August 9 to September 30, 2024.
- Part C addresses other human rights violations from July 1 to September 30, 2024.
It also notes the absence of a formal government in Bangladesh between August 5 and 8.
Additionally, the report reveals that 67 people were killed in mob beatings between July and September, with 36 deaths occurring from July 1 to August 5 and 31 from August 9 to September 30.
